Entrance Hall Chairs

Today I finished my new Entrance Hall chairs I picked up from ebay and various other websites.
Of course by 'finish' I mean finished except for gluing the cushions down!  I might sand them down one more time and give them another coat of black paint...but for now,  I'm calling it a day.

My RL dining room chairs (that's 'real life,' not 'Ralph Lauren,' Andy,)!  are similar to the miniature versions in that they have an upholstered seat, which I change out periodically.  I used to leave them lose --I changed the fabric so often-- but they're actually attached at present.  My guests no longer crash to the floor anymore, which I sort of miss as I find nothing enlivens a dinner party more than watching your dining companions perform impromptu  acrobatics between the roast beef and the sorbet.
I read recently that hall chairs would historically have had a plain wooden seat, for practical purposes.  So perhaps my new hall chairs, with their olive-green striped silk coverings, will end up in the Dining Room, after all.
We'll just have to wait and see...I also worked on the final adjustments upstairs in the Drawing Room, but alas, I was not motivated enough to finish up the job completely --but it's getting there.  Baby steps!

In other breaking news, the moldings and other fittings are starting to arrive for the Dining Room.
Oh.  I guess this photo didn't turn out so great...oops!  Obviously, still getting the hang of the new camera.  I'm designing my own door surrounds for this room, so wish me luck.

Speaking of the Pretty Pleater, (we were, weren't we)?  I found this video and thought it might be of interest to all of us new to the awesomeness of that most wondrous of contraptions!   Watch and enjoy!

Confidential to Derek:  Thanks for the compliment...does this mean I have to be the smart one instead of the pretty one?

  1. I think the chairs look Beautiful in the Entrance Hall, John! The plain wooden seats were for the "Old Days" when Fabric changes were more expensive..... besides, if you leave the seats loose in the Hall... your Unwanted guests will just spill to the floor while waiting for you and leave in a Huff! Lol!
Seriously, those chairs are Beautiful! And the pieces for your Dining Room are looking good too! Your Entrance Hall is a MAGNIFICENT room!!!!

  3. Hi Darling,

I love the Pretty pleater clip, what a great idea.

Your chairs loook great in there and I really enjoyed having a good look at all the little details you have added. Just love the Tiger and Ox head. The vases and mirrors are just divine. And I still love those lamps!!!!

  4. Hi John,

I love reading you posts--they are always so upbeat!

I would leave the chairs in the Entrance Hall. I like them there, and they show off so very well in that room. Besides "we" do not have to do what "they" did, or do we? Very confusing...

Very definitely make your own door surround! It is great fun to do! I love the things you have started to gather for the dining room.

No sluffing off now -- keep mini-ing!!

    Mucho hugs from your friend,
    Iris

  5. Hi John,
If that's how you treat friends you have over for dinner I'd hate to see how you treat your ennemies!
The chairs look beautiful. I'm not sure about the period you're working in, but I do now entrance chairs were meant to be uncomfortable, not necessarily wood seats. One way or the other you did a great job on them and they'll look fantastic anywhere you put them.
The items for the dining room look great. Can't wait to see it !
Long live the pretty pleater! It really is a VERY useful tool.
    Have a great week John!

  6. I didn't do it ON PURPOSE, Giac...besides, that was a long time ago. All of my chairs are now 100% SAFE!

Glad my posts come off to you as 'upbeat,' Iris! You should see my diary --it's a laugh-riot!

Hello Fiona darling! Did you notice the pistol on the hall table? I figured if MP is going to be an American manse, there shoulda oughta be loaded firearms left lying wily-nily about the joint. (For duels and stuff). I want to add a gauntlet, but I don't know if my eyes are keen enough to sew them myself.

Hi Troy! I know --it's funny, right? I mean, it's not like I was laughing AT them, I was laughing --er, OK, I was laughing at them, but in a kind, loving manner. You do understand?

Thanks, Betsy! You always say the sweetest things. Let me know if you need to borrow some extra chairs for the Big Event, I've got chairs coming out everywhere, now it seems!

  8. Hi John! (aka Iona T!)
Sorry to have missed the bus on comments here but wanted to throw in my 2 cents........I love your style and choices for "Merriman Park". Every time I look at the Entry picutres I am drawn in and find myself amazed at the beautiful things you have done. Your Dining Room choices are stunning and that French wallpaper is one of my favorites. Yes, by all means do your own door surround. It will make that part of the house unique to you and something that no one else will have. OK.....I spent more than "2 cents". I am a fan!

  9. Hi John,

Love the chairs, they look great, far more comfortable that plain old wooden ones!

I noticed the dualling pistol, wondered if it was for a future game of Cluedo!

Thank you (and Joanne) for the pretty pleater show, I know Irene told me about them a while back, but now I've actually seen how simple they are to use, I shall have to raid my piggy bank and get one!

The Dining room is going to look Ab Fab!! Looking forward to the final reveal on the drawing room soon either!!

    Hi Venetia! (Ray)

Your notes always put a smile on my face...thanks so much for the encouragement. I am really looking forward to starting the Dining Room and of course using the Pretty Pleater! BTW I was looking through a dollhouse book the other night and came across a room you were credited with doing the drapes --and they were splendid, I might add. I just thought that was a cool coincidence...

    Hey Andy!

I know --draperies are a CINCH with the Pretty Pleater, right?

  11. I'm very impressed with your hall, it positively glows! The chairs are an excellent addition and sit there very well indeed.

Thanks for the PP clip too. It's easy to get cocky when having used a thing for a while so it was good to pick up a couple of tips from it.

  12. Hello Again my lovely,

I wondered what that was! It's absolutely perfect! You have thought of every thing! I'm showing my ignorance here but when you say a gauntlet you mean a glove a chap would wear when firing a pistol? Not a knight in shining armour gauntlet?
I bought a little pair of ladies gloves for my entrance but I think they are not to scale, they are too small I think.....: (

I'm also intrigued with what might be a cigar box in the back right hand. I can't quite see it but it looks lovely.

  13. I love those chairs, great buy and remind me never to sit down to dinner at your house.

  14. Thanks, Irene...Ii must say that your Netherton is breathtaking in those recent exterior photos.

Hi, Fi! Yes, I meant leather glove and NOT armor! As for the 'cigar box' they are a pair of sphinx that I added a marble plinth to because they were a little too small on their own. They also have tiny bead 'feet' beneath the plinth.

No worries, Marisa, I fixed the chair seats! (But mind the trap door in the floor --the alligators in the pool below are always hungry! Moo-hoo-ha-ha-ha!) ;)

  15. I love the chairs...Black is so glam...You must be very patient to make those kits. I've made a few and abandoned the rest (now sitting in a box in my basement....anyone want them?)

    ReplyDelete
  16. LOL! I did have better luck with the chairs. My first attempt (a Hepplewhite table) was a dismal failure...I'll have a go at your kits: Practice Makes Perfect!
